Celebrate Pac-10 Tournament Seedings, Bracket’s, and Musings

UPDATE: Apparently Shipp’s shot may or may have not been illegal. Anyone know anything about this?

I put together a short video that shows Josh Shipp’s amazing behind-the-backboard-game-winning shot against Cal from every angle imaginable. Not only is it one of the most unbelievable shots I’ve ever seen, it was the game winning shot. STILL blows my mind. What a way to go into the tournament eh?

I gotta call up some more cal fans and brag. Enjoy:

I just want to get this strait. After the call in the Stanford game the director of officials for the Pac 10 said that at the end of the game there has to be an obvious foul/violation to warrant a whistle, right? On the inbound strip we have no clear video that there was any contact beyond an assumption by Steve Lavin that there was contact and the official was in the perfect location to call the play. Next the Shipp shot. An unbelievable finish to the game. At the time there was no question as to the validity of the shot (even though the refs reviewed the play several times to set the clock.) It wasn’t until an hour plus later that the obscure rule was brought into question. So it was a bad call because the refs were told by their boss to swallow the whistle at the end of the game? Get over it Cal fan, you played a hell of a game, but lost at the end.

BTW in reviewing the replays I don’t think it went over the backboard (or at least there is not video evidence that confirms it.) The real time angle really looks like it did go over. However if you look at the baseline replay the ball is up and over before it gets to the corner and the third angle (from the opposite baseline) the action of the net shows the ball is moving towards the sideline rather than away from the baseline/backboard.

OK I may be full of crap, but that is my two cents.

The shot was good. Did not COMPLETELY go over the backboard and Josh was not directly behind the board. So good shot.

Good defense by RW and ball went off of Anderson’s knee. No foul if you watch the replay. Josh did not even touch Anderson. RW had his hand behind Anderson but he did NOT push him - why would he???

cal is bitching way too much, right or wrong no?

  7. blackjack Says:

hmmmm. Looks over to me, but regardless I think Cal is bitching way too much. Especially the coach. In fact, an open letter to Cal’s basketball coach.

Dear Coach whose name I don’t know because you’re obviously not worth me knowing what it is:

Stop bitching. If you want to know how to take a loss, talk to Trent Johnson. He knows how to take a loss without sounding like a biotch. And I know his name.

I can feel for them, but they failed to execute the plays for them to win……….Everyone needs to remember Love hit that incredible 3 which was touched by Anderson, which caused Love to double clutch the shot. So many key plays at the very end. It all happened at light speed…..I can’t believe we still won…. :-)

  9. The Coug Says:

The shot is illegal if the ball is determined to have been crossed from the back to the front of the backboard if the backboard reached infinitely skyward. From the video, the shot appears to be illegal, however slightly, BUT I also acknowledge that this would be an absolutely impossible call to make full speed and without instant replay (which officials are not allowed to use).

I think that is why Cal fans (and other Pac-10 fans) are talking more about the non-call on Anderson. Considering how much contact there was on that play as opposed to the limited contact on Collison at the end of regulation in the Stanford game, we Pac-10ers want to make sure officials are calibrated for the tournament.

Honestly, we are expecting another inconsistency to happen on behalf of the “Gutty Little” ones that decides a game. What is most disappointing is that “intelligent” UCLA basketball fans try to find ways to explain it away.

That being said, good luck in the Pac-10 Tournament. May the best team with five players win it fair and square.

Here is how some “intelligent” Cal fans explain the Anderson play….. It wasn’t a foul!

And as much as it pains me I have to give credit to Bruins Nation for finding that nugget.
