Gutty Little Bruins

“try to act intelligent and have some respect” Rage Against the Machine
Jan 26

As tapout from conquestchronicles noted, I like to take a less-is-more approach. Or I think I do. I’m not sure exactly what that means. I think what it means is when I post other people’s comments I tend not to comment on them here and let the comment speak for itself. I get to post here without you commenting on me, so I like to afford the other side the same opportunity. I do interject when i think I have been misunderstood. I also apologize on behalf of any bruin fan who went too far. They were wasted and if they had a good head on their shoulders, they’d feel remorse.

I also feel it incumbent upon me to make one thing very clear. I don’t think y’all should be making excuses for the f*****t bomb, because I truly believe there is no excuse. That being said, Here are comments from the other side. I’ve tried to emphasize your strongest counter-points in bold:

See my post here: http://www.addictedtoquack.com/story/2008/1/24/1505/34115

Its not that Love went to UCLA. Its that Stan Love has and continues to rip the Oregon program and coaches at every turn. If the Loves would have said “Kevin chose the school that he felt was the best fit for him” and moved on, there would be no animosity (see Singler, Kyle). But its because of the Loves classless attitude that this has escalated. Before getting on the Oregon students, look at some of the things that Stan Love has said. Then realize that Stan Love a sixty year old man and not a drunk college student.

I wanted to express agreement with “Addicted To Quacks” comments above regarding Stan Love and how it has directly effected how many Ducks fans feel about the whole situation. While student fans at the Pit went over-the-top in some comments, you can also say that Stan Love inflamed those feelings in the past week by repeating negative comments/attitudes about Ernie Kent and the UO basketball program he made after Kevin Love committed to UOStan Love also was quoted as saying he expected to be the brunt of negative comments at the game and even went so far as to essentially say, Bring It On! (what does Stan expect when he makes those comments and then wears only Bruins gear to the game…he is in the UO Hall of Fame, in case youy didn’t know [Blackjack: Oh I did know]). I do not see Ducks fans as hating on Kevin, it’s more of reacting to the ongoing incitement by his Dad. Much of this negative reaction has been brought on by Stan’s remarks and attitude.

classless? I suggest going to your own sporting events. while you at it, wear the other teams colors too. Bruin fans have definitely raised the classless bar recently. I have been to a half dozen Oregon-UCLA football games in Pasadena, always treated fine, but this last visit, there was a feeling of arrogance and jealousy coming from the Bruin fans, which resulted in derogatory comments to me and my wife the whole time we were there. It happened to other Duck fans too. I had beer cans and garbage thrown at my car when I was leaving. [BJ:Pathetic. On those bruins, not you] Classless?

There is a huge difference when a student section chants and heckles an opposing player vs. insults an beer can throwing from host fans to visiting fans who are there to watch the game and spend money in your town. It’s about context my friend.

On Thursday night, the worst thing the Oregon student section chanted was calling Love a p***y.[BJ: if this were true, I would not have made my post.] Since when are 18-23 year-old supposed to have any tact or class anyway? Love was called a p***y in high school and I am sure his former LO school mates initiated it again on Thursday night. the fact that 1500 students can organize and do anything is amazing. Calling someone a p***y… please, not the end of civilized sports. There has been MUCH WORSE for other Pac-10 fans. It definitely does not warrant your blog article. Besides, after the November UCLA-Oregon football game, I would rate UCLA fans right up there with OSU and Washington fans as the worst in the Pac-10.

Classless? This coming from a school that just hired Rick Neuheisel? Talk to Colorado and UW about that one [BJ: If you check my original post on addictedtoquack.com you’ll see that I don’t ignore Rick Neuheisel’s transgressions]

I say this because when the author of this post wrote that UCLA is a regular Final Four team and that he couldn’t really queston his decision to go to UCLA because UO had only been to two elite eights in five years it rang a little of my USC friends arguments only applied to basketball instead of football. These comments by UCLA fans mirrors those of USC football fans to a T. There were years after Wooden (who everyone I know agrees is the best NCAA BB coach ever and possibly the best NCAA coach in any sport), there are years other than 1995 (questionable team led by a lying cheater) and the Howland years. You were not always the best and I think it’s a little early for UCLA fans to start belittling other Pac-10 teams for not having the pedigree of the bruins in a sport. You are a traditionally good basketball program, who draw a lot of water on the west coast, but check the arrogance at the door the other nine conference schools don’t need it.
About Mac Court, I think that the criticisms should be left to those who were there. There is a special atmosphere about that place that doesn’t come through on camera. Some things are said by students at the court that are crude and offensive, but it’s just a game. If Kevin is the god that many Bruin fans believe he is then he should be able to (1) defend himself, (2) block it out, (3) climitize himself to it since it’s not going to get any better in March or in the NBA. [It’s not really about Kevin as it as about that F-Bomb]
I have taken Bruin fans with me to games at Oregon and one thing that they all have agreed with is that they wish the Rose Bowl was as loud as Autzen and that Pauley was as intimidating as Mac. Instead of being the average 80 year old cardigan wearing Bruin fans at the Rose Bowl or the average student at Pauley who arrives late to the game and leaves early maybe all of you could learn something about getting excited and supporting your school despite their win-loss record. You are a great academic institution with a solid athletic department, if only you had the fans that pushed you into the realm of truly upper eschelon program.
In essense Bruin fans, grow up, get over it, move on, get used to it and don’t expect an apology. We’re not sorry it happened and unless you forgot the students were trying to piss off his family and make the Love’s hurt as bad as they made Duck fans hurt after he committed to UCLA and made a series of unwanted and unnecessary comments about the school and the team.

Get a life dude. If you don’t like it then stay home in your rocking chair. Love is lucky that all they did is chant names. [I would but my rocking chair is broken.]

I am a 63 year old woman who was at the game and witnessed everything, including Stan Love and his family taunting the crowd and the mascot, taking pictures and acting smug & cocky most of the time. Mr. Love and his entourage were lucky to have such a good seats as I would have put them up in the 3rd balcony. Folks, here’s Stan Love, one of the most honored and decorated athletes in UO history with his place in the UO Sports Hall of Fame, acting like an idiot and making comments that degrade his alma mater’s basketball program. How would Bruin fans feel is Bill Walton criticized your program when Luke went to Arizona? Let’s face it, Kevin Love was never coming to Oregon and Mr. Love should have kept his mouth shut. His behavior during the game only “egged on” the Pit Crew and quite frankly, they were pretty “mild” compared to other Pac 10 venues I’ve been in considering the circumstances. Hats off to Kevin Love, a terrific basketball player and very classy young man. He didn’t let the events get to him and played his heart out. So did the Ducks. The Pit Crew’s signs and chants were funny and not as “deplorable” as depicted. Mac Court is a fantastic atmosphere and the fans are hanging over the court. We will miss it when the new arena is built. It was a GREAT game! So note to UCLA fans, stop being so self righteous and just enjoy your great basketball team.
