I honestly don’t remember how I stumbled upon this, but I did and there is nothing more to add because this is the perspective of a bruin-disliking oregon fan who is telling it like it is. Any Oregon fan who was chanting this, listen here: you disgust me. you represent everything that is wrong about sports. There is no excuse for saying “Loves a f***ot.” at all. period. Way to completely set back Oregon sports 100 years. Here’s an excerpt, but I encourage all of you to read the rest of the article:
It’s times like this I get momentarily embarrassed to be a sports fan. Sure, there were the requisite bad calls, and it’s kind of funny how Kevin Love is apparently unable to get called for a foul … until it doesn’t count. And by now I’m used to the Pit Crew yelling ” … SUCKS!” after each opposing player is announced. And, OK, I get that they resent that Love went to UCLA instead of UO (though if I’m being honest and not a fan, c’mon, now, really. UCLA is a regular Final Four team. Oregon made the tournament - and the Elite Eight - last year for the first time in something like five years).
But you know what? I don’t care. That doesn’t make it OK that the student section (and lord knows how many adults) were chanting, “Love’s a [f***ot!”] when he first came out. It’s not much of an improvement that they switched to [“Love’s a p*ssy!”] later. It turned my stomach. And all that’s being reported - at least all I’ve seen on ESPN - is that the crowd yelled “insults.” I thought that was the kind of [bullcrap] that a school would get called on.
Thanks to Molly for that honest and candid account. Sometimes its hard for us to put aside the zealous advocacy for our favorite sports teams, but thats no excuse for this sort of behavior. I only hope most Oregon fans are like Molly and that group of students (and adults, apparently) chanting those childish and homophobic insults represent only a super-minority of the Oregon duck fanbase.
Any one else have thoughts on this?

Maybe I am a bit more classless (entirely possible) or subscribe closer to the “sticks and stones” doctrine. Those who use the F-bomb (rhymes with maggot) have mental deficiencies that go beyond their statements as sports fans. We should give them pity rather than be angry at them.
To put it in perspective. When USA Soccer goes to play in Central America, locals circle their hotels the night before the game and honk their horns. Then when they get to the stadium the fans rain PISS and BLOOD filled balloons. Changing a cell number and getting yelled at by 500 white college kids ain’t that bad.
Plus I think Oregon fans learned the same lesson as those kids at the San Francisco Zoo. Don’t taunt the animals!
January 25th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
Poor Kevin Love. Love’s a f****t may have been in poor taste, though I have no problem with “Love’s a pu**y.”
See my post here: http://www.addictedtoquack.com/story/2008/1/24/1505/34115
Its not that Love went to UCLA. Its that Stan Love has and continues to rip the Oregon program and coaches at every turn. If the Loves would have said “Kevin chose the school that he felt was the best fit for him” and moved on, there would be no animosity (see Singler, Kyle). But its because of the Loves classless attitude that this has escalated. Before getting on the Oregon students, look at some of the things that Stan Love has said. Then realize that Stan Love a sixty year old man and not a drunk college student.
January 25th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
Okay, okay. I didn’t want to come out and say it, but if all he said was Love’s a p***y I wouldn’t have posted that.
As Molson put it, I have a problem with the F-bomb word that rhymes with maggot. Last time I checked, this was the 21st century.
I read your post and I’ve read some of the things Stan Love has said about the Oregon program…maybe he talks a little too much smack…but did he call Oregon/Oregon fans/Ernie Kent/the Oregon basketball program F***ots?
Even if he did, that STILL wouldn’t be an excuse. There’s no excuse for it. Yes, fans can be pissed. Yes, fans can go overboard, especially when wasted (the cold pizza chick can tell you all about that), but that’s a very, very dangerous word and when any consolidated group of people, sober or drunk, immature college student or not, are using that word I think it needs to be called out.
I do appreciate your comments though I pretty vehemently disagree with them.
January 25th, 2008 at 11:09 pm
Proof that SCOREBOARD is the best taunt of all. We’ll see you guys next month in Pauley and I can tell you, while we may not hack cell phone numbers, the students will be ready to have some fun. If you guys don’t want your coach to HELP schlep some equipment maybe he will continue to get second class recruits.
January 25th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
Yeah, forgot about the cell phone thing. That’s pretty messed up.
January 25th, 2008 at 11:54 pm
I did a little research on Youtube and found the following. It doesn’t show you the full amount of vulgar language that was used, but you can get a feeling for what it must have been like to be there.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=8d9fl3PXbKs
I wonder why none of the commentators made mention of just how bad it was.
January 26th, 2008 at 10:06 am
I wanted to express agreement with “Addicted To Quacks” comments above regarding Stan Love and how it has directly effected how many Ducks fans feel about the whole situation. While student fans at the Pit went over-the-top in some comments, you can also say that Stan Love inflamed those feelings in the past week by repeating negative comments/attitudes about Ernie Kent and the UO basketball program he made after Kevin Love committed to UO…Stan Love also was quoted as saying he expected to be the brunt of negative comments at the game and even went so far as to essentially say, Bring It On! (what does Stan expect when he makes those comments and then wears only Bruins gear to the game…he is in the UO Hall of Fame, in case youy didn’t know). I do not see Ducks fans as hating on Kevin, it’s more of reacting to the ongoing incitement by his Dad. Much of this negative reaction has been brought on by Stan’s remarks and attitude.
January 26th, 2008 at 10:16 am
classless? I suggest going to your own sporting events. while you at it, wear the other teams colors too. Bruin fans have definitely raised the classless bar recently. I have been to a half dozen Oregon-UCLA football games in Pasadena, always treated fine, but this last visit, there was a feeling of arrogance and jealousy coming from the Bruin fans, which resulted in derogatory comments to me and my wife the whole time we were there. It happened to other Duck fans too. I had beer cans and garbage thrown at my car when I was leaving. Classless?
There is a huge difference when a student section chants and heckles an opposing player vs. insults an beer can throwing from host fans to visiting fans who are there to watch the game and spend money in your town. It’s about context my friend.
On Thursday night, the worst thing the Oregon student section chanted was calling Love a pussy. Since when are 18-23 year-old supposed to have any tact or class anyway? Love was called a pussy in high school and I am sure his former LO school mates initiated it again on Thursday night. the fact that 1500 students can organize and do anything is amazing. Calling someone a pussy… please, not the end of civilized sports. There has been MUCH WORSE for other Pac-10 fans. It definitely does not warrant your blog article. Besides, after the November UCLA-Oregon football game, I would rate UCLA fans right up there with OSU and Washington fans as the worst in the Pac-10.
Classless? This coming from a school that just hired Rick Neuheisel? Talk to Colorado and UW about that one
January 26th, 2008 at 10:39 am
As an alumnus of Oregon and a native Angelino who is surrounded by Bruin fans I have a few messages for you. My message is chiefly this, “get over it and get over yourself.”
Quickly reflect Bruin fans, you are U-C-L-A. You are not the USC football equivalent of basketball. You are not Duke or UNC. All of the Bruin fans I know were near universally complaining about USC fans a few years ago when they started to get back to the upper eschelon of football as forgetting about the late 1980’s - 2000. It was if Trojan football went from the 1970’s to 2001 in a blink and those two decades of crappy ball never happened.
I say this because when the author of this post wrote that UCLA is a regular Final Four team and that he couldn’t really queston his decision to go to UCLA because UO had only been to two elite eights in five years it rang a little of my USC friends arguments only applied to basketball instead of football. These comments by UCLA fans mirrors those of USC football fans to a T. There were years after Wooden (who everyone I know agrees is the best NCAA BB coach ever and possibly the best NCAA coach in any sport), there are years other than 1995 (questionable team led by a lying cheater) and the Howland years. You were not always the best and I think it’s a little early for UCLA fans to start belittling other Pac-10 teams for not having the pedigree of the bruins in a sport. You are a traditionally good basketball program, who draw a lot of water on the west coast, but check the arrogance at the door the other nine conference schools don’t need it.
About Mac Court, I think that the criticisms should be left to those who were there. There is a special atmosphere about that place that doesn’t come through on camera. Some things are said by students at the court that are crude and offensive, but it’s just a game. If Kevin is the god that many Bruin fans believe he is then he should be able to (1) defend himself, (2) block it out, (3) climitize himself to it since it’s not going to get any better in March or in the NBA.
I have taken Bruin fans with me to games at Oregon and one thing that they all have agreed with is that they wish the Rose Bowl was as loud as Autzen and that Pauley was as intimidating as Mac. Instead of being the average 80 year old cardigan wearing Bruin fans at the Rose Bowl or the average student at Pauley who arrives late to the game and leaves early maybe all of you could learn something about getting excited and supporting your school despite their win-loss record. You are a great academic institution with a solid athletic department, if only you had the fans that pushed you into the realm of truly upper eschelon program.
In essense Bruin fans, grow up, get over it, move on, get used to it and don’t expect an apology. We’re not sorry it happened and unless you forgot the students were trying to piss off his family and make the Love’s hurt as bad as they made Duck fans hurt after he committed to UCLA and made a series of unwanted and unnecessary comments about the school and the team.
January 26th, 2008 at 10:47 am
Get a life dude. If you don’t like it then stay home in your rocking chair. Love is lucky that all they did is chant names.
January 26th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
I am a 63 year old woman who was at the game and witnessed everything, including Stan Love and his family taunting the crowd and the mascot, taking pictures and acting smug & cocky most of the time. Mr. Love and his entourage were lucky to have such a good seats as I would have put them up in the 3rd balcony. Folks, here’s Stan Love, one of the most honored and decorated athletes in UO history with his place in the UO Sports Hall of Fame, acting like an idiot and making comments that degrade his alma mater’s basketball program. How would Bruin fans feel is Bill Walton criticized your program when Luke went to Arizona? Let’s face it, Kevin Love was never coming to Oregon and Mr. Love should have kept his mouth shut. His behavior during the game only “egged on” the Pit Crew and quite frankly, they were pretty “mild” compared to other Pac 10 venues I’ve been in considering the circumstances. Hats off to Kevin Love, a terrific basketball player and very classy young man. He didn’t let the events get to him and played his heart out. So did the Ducks. The Pit Crew’s signs and chants were funny and not as “deplorable” as depicted. Mac Court is a fantastic atmosphere and the fans are hanging over the court. We will miss it when the new arena is built. It was a GREAT game! So note to UCLA fans, stop being so self righteous and just enjoy your great basketball team.
January 26th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
Wow. Quite a few responses here. I’ll have another post integrating some of these comments, as promised.
I’m not going to “get over” myself, or “stop being self-righteous” because that implies I have an ego problem and I don’t. If ANY UCLA FAN DARE SAY F*****T AROUND ME, THEY ARE GOING TO GET A MOUTHFUL. IF I WAS EVER AT A GAME AND THEY CHANTED THAT, I WOULD DO EVERYTHING IN MY POWER TO MAKE THEM STOP EVEN IF IT MEANT ME GETTING KICKED OUT.
I want to know what Stan Love was doing/saying. The media has COMPLETELY ignored this issue. Does anyone know exactly what he was saying/doing? Was it really bad? “egging on” isn’t enough for me to base an opinion off of. I want to know. If he was being extremely immature, I want to document this because that’s not excusable either. Though from my angle, it’s just kinda funny at this point.
Love’s a P****y: Not a huge deal for me. yes, slightly misogynistic but I hear female use this one as much as males as a derogatory term. I can see myself chanting this at a game.
The Mike Love/Brian Wilson drug/mental issues problem (I forgot which is which): Drugs. Fair game. Mental issues, kinda weak (come on. dudes a BEACH BOY.) but still fair game.
Phone number: 400 voice messages. Kinda classless, but I don’t feel too bad for Kevin Love. In one year he can afford to hire someone to do all his cellphone talking for him.
Pretty much every thing else the student section was saying: fair game…except for…
The F****t bomb: that’s really what the whole post is about that one word. I hate that word. I can’t stand it. I have personally used this word for a great deal of my life without truly understanding how horrible and disgusting a word it is and I’ve totally ceased using it. To see, in the 21st century a great and well respected university like Oregon using this word…In the words of Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy, “it makes me want to puke.”
Again, give me reports of stuff deplorable things UCLA fans have done or what Stan Love has done and I’ll post them. UCLA fans aren’t angels either. If you ever go to bruinsnation.com, that is an institutional lack of class. I don’t know why its so hard for people to understand how impartial I am on certain things. Yes, I’m a UCLA fan, but I try to be a decent, clear-thinking, logical human being first. Sometimes these things conflict and I truly can’t step out and be an impartial observer, but I really think I’m right on this one.
January 26th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
Exactly, and it gets me even more annoyed when the Oregon Athletic Department hid behind the first amendment/kids will be kids excuse…have some accountability. When I read that quote it reminded me of a game my Senior year (05-06) near the beginning of the season, and made me wonder why no one in the vaunted Pit had the sensibility to do something about the cheer.
I remember standing in the student section that game about 4 rows, there had been some bad calls and thuggish behavior by an opposing player so we were pissed. This Freshman standing behind us decided his best way to show support was to scream F***ot repeatedly (kinda like the “stupid” chant which, incidentally, I have always felt to be pretty…well, stupid albeit innocuous). I felt exactly like you did Andy so I turned to the guy and less then politely told him to shut it. He pulled the same first amendment “freedom of speech man” argument as the UO AD spokesperson.
Clearly new to the whole “being a Bruin” thing, or not realizing John F-ing Wooden was sitting within earshot, I let this pimply faced lad know that “just because you can’t get arrested for acting like a jackass doesn’t change the fact that you are acting like a jackass. You are at UCLA now, in University, try to act intelligent and have some respect.” Needless to say he didn’t use the word again that game and I hope that he found better ways to cheer on the Bruins and intimidate opponents.
Go Bruins
January 26th, 2008 at 8:59 pm
this is very funny to me. what is the university supposed to do, count how many drinks each student has had before he or she comes in here? get over it. you cant get arrested for saying “f*ggot”. you think kevin love hasnt had people call him names before? hes a big boy. this sounds like when the student section bagged on henry bibby a couple years back - who cares? deal with it. there are drunk kids in the stands. we’ve all be at parties where people have too much to drink. play basketball. quit whining. and stan love can stop snacking on pen*s as far as im concerned - what a garbage comment he put in the papers about his friends from new york and florida. don’t spoil your dinner, stan.
January 26th, 2008 at 10:38 pm
As an oregon fan, and student, I completely agree that the pit crew was beyond out of control. Those things shouldn’t be said, and Stan Love should have been classy as well, just like the Singlers. That doesn’t excuse the pit crew. Whoever the idiot is that said oregon gets 2nd hand recruits… thats why ernie is bringin in the #6 recruiting class in the nation next year right? Malik was considered the next Carmelo, and so on. Atleast get that right, and about UCLA being a regular final four team, come on, except for the last 2 years I dont remember them being in it for a while. For a while your “great” program wasn’t so great. So just be careful with your big heads. Who won the pac-10 last year? and yes i know you guys have like 11 championships(all from the wooden era, i love john). But to end, yes the Oregon student section should have been handled better, especially cause they didn’t follow our own code of conduckt.
January 26th, 2008 at 11:30 pm
Actually it looks like UCLA’s incoming class is ranked #2 and Oregon is at #12. Again, Scoreboard!
January 27th, 2008 at 12:28 am
WHATEVER! to both sides. i’m a die hard bruin fan/alumn but i think the whole oregon fan thing has gone too far. i understand coach howland’s response since he has to back up his k-love and his family, but seriously get the stcks out of your bums fellow bruins! uh i hope i didn’t offend anyone there… i think oregon fans are great and it was a great game and we won, period. k-love knew what was gonna go down, stan love knew what was gonna go down, whatever, was horrible stuff said? sure. is it sad that it wasn’t a g-rated event? ya, but we have to get off our high horses. while i in no way respect or will back up the comments made, i hope bruins fans take k-loves lead and let it roll. it’s not like he was threatened or anything crazy like that. c’mon it’s a bunch of drunk kids at a basketball game on a thursday night at mac court. they say stupid things, but that’s no reason to get our panties in a bunch. college kids do stupid things, whatever. i think instead of focusing on the puit crew’s conduct, our attention should be on kevin love’s response to it and applaud it.

I am ashamed of the behavior of our students towards Kevin Love, UCLA and his family.
It’s way out of bounds to post a rival athlete’s phone number to encourage hundreds of people to call at all hours.
It’s way out of line to talk about someone’s mental health problems
and, it is way, way out of line to scream homophobic comments. If this was done in any other campus contexts the students would be facing discipline now.
I, along with many, many other people who love Oregon will put a stop to this. The UO is trying to build a new arena in a quiet, family neighborhood. This does not make it easier.
We don’t want babyfaced drunken yellow shirted kids screaming racist and homophobic slurs in our community.
January 27th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
I honestly was hoping and expecting every single Oregon fan to take a stand similiar to this. But I guess that’s just me.
Keep fighting the good fight.
January 27th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
get over yourself old people and parents. please, you are the same ppl [If you only knew how much your credibility increased merely by writing "People" instead of ppl. Sometimes, I feel like a pretentious jackass for saying like that but...man its true] who say “dont say [fa**ot], cover your ears jimmy” [I like Jimmy Eat World] than at your little parties [It's parties man. I hope I don't find out your a student by the end of this paragraph] say how you dont want gay marriage [I don't want to get political, but you are wrong] and how that one couple just are not right. [one couple just are not right. I didn't know Fez was a duck fan] i love how you would think the world is over because of some chants said at a 18 year old and a old man whos past is about as bad as you can imagine. [if you read my breakdown on everything, I pretty much said everything was fair game except f*****] dont belive me?] talk with ppl [I don't know PPL. Is that rapper?] who have worked with stan love, than you will know what the fuss about him is. read the papers, and get off your high horse [Not only are horses expensive, but I'm short so a high horse is totally out of the question. I prefer to drive my honda civic when I can]. if your [I don't mind these as much. I actually started the facebook group "I judge you when you judge me for using bad grammar." The tagline is "GO F*** YOU'RE SELVES." I know, I'm a genius.] such good people and parents, chanting those things should not affect your kids, there kids, or anyone [How about the gay people in that game who had to stand there and take that? How about every single gay person who had to read that in the newspaper? what about them?]. and the best part is, these same people who say dont say those things, are the same in there days who ran onto the court and kicked bill walton. AHHAHAHAHAH. go ducks
[People used to kick bill walton? That's kinda funny]
January 27th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
I guess the loss last week caused favre to fall off the wagon. Either that or the comment is a bad example of a University of Oregon education.

seriously, can I make you an admin and just let you post on the site whenever the hell you feel like it? Like no obligations obviously, but this gold shouldn’t be buried here.

puffbobmarleydude! » I respect this take a lot. I can tell you’re a level-headed person. post more.
January 27th, 2008 at 9:26 pm
ya, and when i walk down the street hearing people saying how they got jewed and what not. and yes, if you actually knew anything, or were a real fan, you would know bill walton got kicked by a fan when he played in mac court and they got beat and it got put on the cover of SI. and i wrote quickly because i can not stop laughing at how many ppl, yes, i made it short and sweet, cause im not kissing my own ass and i dont care what you think i just am getting my point across but who cares, no one listens, PEOPLE only listen to themselves and whine and complain. saying faggot is TERRIBLE, saying loves a pussy is stupid, but stop jumping up and down and trying to sound like you are the bigger man. ernie came out on saturday, said what needed to be said, the pit crew got the message, and all was clean. but with you sitting here trying to make it out to be soooo much more than it is. just like the air force football coach saying he needed more black players cause they needed more speed, all these old white pc people came up throwing there hands around, and made a bigger deal over it than the black players, that is what you are doing right now. just drop it, move on, its not happening again, and the sun will come up tommorw. go ducks
January 27th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
If it doesn’t happen again, then that’s all I care about.
And I think there is a considerable difference between two people (note I’m not endorsing this) saying “Oh I totally got jewed” and 1,500 people chanting “Jordan Farmar is a hebe.”

when is this country going to understand that there are more meanings for gay and f*gg*t than the simple homophobic meanings?? For a good solid decade now, the word f*gg*t has expanded to mean more than just a hateful word against gays. it is also synonomous with bi*ch, douche, asshole, etc. calling something GAY does not necessarily mean you think something is homosexual! Here’s a simple example. “ok class the book reports will be due a week early” and some student will respond by saying “a week early?? thats gay” people use the word GAY nowadays especially younger people like Eric Cartman uses the word “fu*kin weak” if cartman says “weak dude!” it doesn’t mean he thinks the guy he’s talking to isn’t strong, it means “fu*k dude! that’s gay! that sucks!” So when they said Love’s a f*gg*t, i’m pretty sure they weren’t working on inside information that Love is actually a homosexual.
January 31st, 2008 at 8:33 am
Four words.
criticism and vitriol
opinion and hate
Saying someone or something “is gay” has always meant criticism or disparaging. Both “cool” under having common sense.
Saying someone is a loser, or sucks, or weak is having a “strong opinion” on the matter.
Calling someone a f_ggot HAS NEVER BEEN cool. It’s used in a caustic, hateful way and usually once it is said leads to violence against the accused. Once one person in a crowd is allowed to spout such hateful words, “pack mentality” takes over and the words become an accepted form of hate and violence (usually, not always- but don’t try to explain to anyone that saying those words “were all in jest” and “all in good fun” IT WASN’T. it never will be) ensues. If the violence doesn’t follow, the fabric of the community is compromised nonetheless.
Listen, when you’ve got 63-year old women trying to explain this away for the U of O fans (read: Pit Crew), that community has got problems.
Sanctimony on my part? I don’t think so. That would imply that I’m saying you guys are f_ggots yourselves and no way near the cool heterosexual that I am. That’s sanctimony. I’m saying be rational. Think this through. Be cool about this. You don’t have to buy what you might think I’m selling, just be decent. I’m sure all you fans of U of O are decent without needing words of encouragement from me, but I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t at least put this out there. (because yeah. . .I don’t know you, I’m not pretending to. But. . .you don’t know me either)
